Colorful Quilts

This past weekend, on a trip to Durant Oklahoma, I was inspired by a quaint little fabric shop I found in the old downtown area. The HNT Quilt Shop caters primarily to the quilting community and offers a wonderful assortment of fabrics and notions that appeal to quilters young and…more mature. As I entered the shop, it was immediately evident that the staff was friendly and passionate about what they were doing.

But what caught my attention the most was the color! The store is a visual feast of reds, yellows, greens, blues, and every color in between. The color is everywhere, starting with the bolts of fabric, which are all meticulously arranged and displayed by color, to the large selection of colorful thread spools.

Creating A Kid’s Playroom

A dedicated playroom in your home can be a great benefit for keeping the kids occupied and safe, while allowing you to concentrate on life’s daily chores. But to accomplish this, it is critical to properly plan and design the room from the onset. All kids have different likes and needs, and the playroom must be designed to address those interests.

In addition, you must consider that your kids will grow faster than you think, and the playroom will no doubt be used less and less as the kid’s get older and develop other interests. So unless the budget is not a factor, you probably don’t want to invest in expensive kid’s furnishings at this early age, since the room may change purpose and personality in only a few years.

Area Rug Trends

Last week I stopped in at Capel Rugs. For a long time, Capel has been one of my favorite Dallas-area retail suppliers of area rugs. They have everything from reasonably priced machine made rugs, to exquisite hand knotted masterpieces. But the best part, is that the rugs are all hanging instead of laying one on top of the other on the floor. I can take my time and flip through the selections at my own pace. Once I want to see one on the floor, the staff is fast and accommodating.

I loved seeing all the new arrivals. Here’s a few of what I saw.

Yellow and gray, one of my favorite combinations, continues to be popular in home decor.

My Upside-Down Christmas Tree

For the past 6 years I’ve been hanging our tree upside-down from the ceiling. And while I acknowledge that it’s not for everyone, everyone always smiles when they see it. And isn’t that what Christmas is all about? My family and I love the way it looks. But mostly, we love the way it makes our holiday feel…fun, exciting and open to new adventures.

Christmas decorating is a big part of the holiday season, with the tree being the indisputable focal point. But most people don’t stop with just the tree! There are countless of collectibles available that are festive and fun to collect.

My mom had a collection of Dickens Village. I have a small collection of nativity scenes, and one of my dearest clients collects Bryer Carolers. This year I helped her decorate her highrise apartment and couldn’t help cranking up the Christmas music and singing along.

Florida Summer Homes

If you’ve lived in South Florida, you’re probably familiar with the “snow birds”. Every year flocks of Northerners descend by the thousands on the Florida coasts, turning typically sleepy beach towns into vibrant, bustling beach destinations. For many this is an annual migration and most have summer homes ready to inhabit between the months of December through April.

Last August I spent a few days in Bonita Springs located on the west coast. My sister has a condo there so it’s a familiar destination for me. Bonita is a relatively small beach town with it’s fair share of summer homes. This particular street is lined with Royal Palms and flanked on both sides with amazing Florida homes, each as unique as the next one. Some have permanent residents, but most are boarded up and serve as the summer homes of the snow birds! I share with you some of my favorites.
